PROFILE
Since her debut as vocal soloist in her Kindergarten Christmas Concert, Canadian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, video artist and Renaissance woman Sister Dorothy has been amazing and entertaining audiences globally.
Classically trained but influenced by classic rock, Sister Dorothy performs on classical, steel-string and electric guitars, flute and voice. From 16th Century minstrel to modern day alternative folk-pop rocker, Sister Dorothy features music by John Dowland, and J.S. Bach as well as her own compositions on topics such as love, addiction and swimming.
Her high energy performance and Thrift Shop Chic combine to make Sister Dorothy's live concerts uniquely entertaining. Whether performing solo or backed by bass bass and drums, or the Tuning Pegs Guitar Trio, Sister Dorothy's perfomance is suitable for all ages.
Sister Dorothy's recording career began in 1990 as songwriter and lead guitarist with the popular all female rock band the Welfare $tarlets. The $tarlets released 2 CD's and toured across Canada performing at festivals, TV shows, colleges and nightclubs before retiring in 1995.
Since starting her own company OverGround Records in 1995, Sister Dorothy has released 5 CD's and over 30 videos. Her videos have been screened nationally on TV and Film Festivals.
Live performances include the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Pan Am Games, International Womens Day- Kingston Jamaica, Museum of Man and Nature, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Gabriola Island BC, Toronto Ontario, All-Age School Negril, Jamaica and International Music Camp, USA.
Sister Dorothy is involved with the Manitoba Arts Council Artists in the Schools and touring programs. She has worked with students in Churchill, Lynn Lake, Sagkeeng Anicinabe High School and performed in many schools across Canada.
Dorothy is a producer member and past president of Video Pool in Winnipeg. She is a member of the Folk Arts Council and the Winnipeg Musicians Association Local 190. She performs regularly in Winnipeg at McNally Robinson Bookstore, Blue Note Cafe, Centennial Library Skywalk Concert Series, Fringe Festival, Out To Lunch Concerts, the Forks, schools, nursing homes, private parties and weddings.
As well as performing and making videos, Sister Dorothy has taught music both privately and in schools for many years. She has coordinated the guitar program at the International Music Camp USA for 20 years and has offered an adult guitar course for the St. James School Division Continuing Education.
Sister Dorothy is currently working on a new video, her next CD and some new recipes.
